What to Expect at Texas Pelvic Health
Wondering what your first appointment will look like at TPH? Here’s everything you need to know.
We know starting pelvic floor physical therapy can feel intimidating.
For many of our patients, the first appointment is the hardest one to schedule. Not because they don't need help, but because they don't know what to expect.
Will I need an internal exam?
What should I wear?
Do I need to cancel if I'm on my period?
Is this going to be awkward?
These are all questions we hear every week.
We believe one of the best ways to calm nerves is knowing exactly what to expect.
So we created this page to walk you through the entire process, from the moment you contact our office all the way through discharge.

There are three ways most patients find their way to Texas Pelvic Health.
Some patients fill out a form on our website.
Some are referred by a physician, midwife, chiropractor, or another healthcare provider.
And some simply pick up the phone and call us directly (903-962-2600).
No matter how you find us, Landry will help get you scheduled and answer any questions you have along the way.
We currently have offices in Sulphur Springs, Canton, and Rockwall.
Funny enough, the three clinics form a nearly perfect triangle across East Texas. Completely unintentional, but it ended up working out really well because many of our patients live somewhere in the middle of at least two of our locations.

Once you're scheduled, you'll receive intake paperwork by email.
We ask that paperwork be completed within 48 hours of scheduling in order to secure your appointment.
The paperwork helps your therapist begin learning your story before you ever walk through the door.
We know it's not the most exciting part of the process, but it allows us to spend less time gathering information during your appointment and more time helping you.
You'll also be asked to place a card on file.
Again, not because we enjoy paperwork. Quite the opposite.
Having everything completed beforehand makes checkout quick and easy and allows us to focus on what actually matters: you.
After that, you're done until your appointment.
You'll receive a confirmation email the Friday before your visit. We ask that you confirm your appointment so we can continue serving patients on our waitlist as efficiently as possible.
-
Because your paperwork is already complete, there's no need to arrive early.
You are welcome to if it makes you feel more comfortable, but there is no rush.
Once you arrive, feel free to use the restroom before your appointment. No need to ask permission.
When it's time for your evaluation, your therapist will come get you from the waiting room and bring you back to a private treatment room.
The first thing you'll do is sit down in a comfy chair and talk.
And honestly, that's one of the most important parts of the entire appointment.
Before you arrived, your therapist reviewed your paperwork, developed a few hypotheses, and likely wrote down several follow-up questions.
This is your opportunity to tell your story.
Because as we all know, things often sound very different on paper than they do in real life.
-
After we talk, your therapist will recommend an examination based on your symptoms and goals.
For some patients, that may include an orthopedic assessment of the hips, back, pelvis, posture, movement patterns, strength, or mobility.
For others, an internal pelvic floor muscle examination may be recommended.
The goal of an internal examination is not simply to perform an internal examination.
The goal is to gather information.
It helps us determine whether the pelvic floor muscles are contributing to your symptoms and allows us to create the most effective treatment plan possible.
Nothing is ever performed without your consent, and you are always in control of your care.
-
After the examination, your therapist will step out of the room so you can get dressed.
We'll provide wipes, tissues, and plenty of time.
Then we'll come back in and explain exactly what we found.
We'll discuss what is contributing to your symptoms, what we plan to do about it, and how we plan to help you reach your goals.
You'll leave with a home program, usually around three things to work on.
Not because that's all you need.
Because we've found that overwhelming patients with ten different exercises doesn't help anyone.
We'd rather give you three things you'll actually do.

At Texas Pelvic Health, we believe education is one of the most important things we provide.
We don't want you dependent on physical therapy forever.
We want you to understand your body.
We want you to understand your symptoms.
And we want you to know exactly what to do if those symptoms ever try to return.
That's why we typically see patients more frequently in the beginning and less frequently as treatment progresses.
Our goal is to help you become independent, confident, and empowered in your body.
One Thing We Tell Every Patient
Symptoms are the last thing to show up and the first thing to go away. While symptom relief is absolutely one of our goals, we also want to address the dysfunction that created those symptoms in the first place. Our goal is not temporary relief. Our goal is lasting relief.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
No.
In fact, many pelvic floor symptoms are worse during a menstrual cycle.
If your symptoms tend to flare on your period, we actually encourage you to keep your appointment. Seeing symptoms in real time often provides valuable information that helps guide treatment.
-
No. We promise we do not care.
-
Athleisure is usually the easiest option.
Leggings, athletic shorts, joggers, and workout clothes all work great.
If you'd like more details, we have an entire blog dedicated to what to wear to pelvic floor therapy.
-
That's okay.
Internal examinations are never mandatory.
Your therapist may recommend one, but you are always in control of your care and can decline any part of the evaluation.
